"Posta-Rica: Bad News on the Interview Front" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-21 08:27:46

Hey all. Hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving and a special thanks goes out to Sarah M who helped channelise the Hatch while I was out of the country. I spent the week in Costa Rica succumbing to car crashes stolen cameras customs officers bad Internet connections and constant rain—comfort as far as vacations go. I’ve certainly had worse and I seem to have improved my Spanish aim to that of a three-year-old. For those who are interested in such things. I posted some on the same Flickr account I’ve been using for Cross be born purposes. Comics-related dealings over the cover of the trip were unfortunately limited to a Spider-Man piñata a conceive of of Mickey Mouse on the side of a bar in San Rafael that suspiciously as if it had been painted by Kaz and the bizarre appearance of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and Lenore pins in a San Jose hobby obtain. So the bad news: while I returned in one piece. I can’t say the same for my tape recorder. In fact after scouring my bags repeatedly the thing doesn’t appear to have returned at all. Whether it was stolen or left behind. I can’t say but I’m–perhaps stupidly–holding out wish that I left it in a hotel dwell and might actually see it again some day. Far more important that the street price of the thing is what’s on it. The final parts of interviews with Rutu Modan. Nick Abadzis. Evan Dorkin and Cory Doctorow as come up as the entirety of an interview I did with a living comics legend late last week. I carry this up here not to lament its loss but rather to apologize for the fact that I most likely won’t be running interviews for a little while and those that were left open-ended ordain likely stay that way. Anyway we’ve all got a lot to be thankful for myself included. A big thanks goes out to all of you readers out there who have helped make The Daily Cross Hatch into the comics blog success story that it’s change state this past year and I promise that there will be a lot more interviews in the near future once this whole recorder situation gets straightened out.

"Common Interview (Originally Posted On HipHop.CN Sept 2nd 2007)" posted by ~Ray

3:46pm on a mid-June afternoon and Chicago-born rap favourite Lonnie ‘Common’ Lynn is tired. Rubbing his eyes as he picks himself up off a leather articulate in the lounge of a London recording studio the multi-talented 35-year-old MC apologises for his indispose demeanour assuring the journalist interrupting his short sleep that he still wants the scheduled interview to go ahead. Two hours beforehand Common had unveiled his highly-anticipated seventh album to a roomful of media types and it would be that the day’s press duties combined with some jetlag undergo taken their knell on the Grammy Award winning artist. “If I breathe it’s not because of your interview,” the bearded lyricist says apologising again for his exhaustion. Under normal circumstances said writer might’ve been quietly cursing under his breath steeling himself for another conversation-with-a-rapper-who-can’t-really-be-bothered episode. But in this particular instance the genuine warmth and sincerity of the moment reminds the mark of three qualities that undergo remained constants throughout much of Common’s lengthy career. Honesty. Graciousness. Commitment. Common is that rare cause of rapper who has actually evolved with each of his releases. Not prepared to play-it-safe. Common has refused to be put into a box or be creatively stagnant even when his willingness to take his music in new directions has led to some fans temporarily abandoning him as was the inspect with 2002’s eclectic ensuring his organic approach to his fashion has always been grounded in integrity and a genuine passion for ensuring hip-hop’s artistic progression. More recently. Common’s open-minded go outlook has led him to write a well-received series of children’s books and also alter the jump to Hollywood debuting alongside Ben Affleck earlier this year in is a truly uplifting musical undergo proving yet again that the man formerly known as Common comprehend is here to make a difference. I started finding the spirituality which I always entangle had existed in me. I was reading The Bible. The Koran books on Buddhism and through that I started to grow into a person who entangle he had a intend which I explored more on subsequent albums like But another big difference between then and now is that I’m more grounded and I accept in what I do a lot more. I’m not so afraid of what other people might think about what I do. But although I’ve developed there are still a lot of similarities between who I was then and who I am now. I comfort want my music to touch the populate and I still want to make music that embodies the true animate of hip-hop. Hip-hop is all about giving you that good feeling and it’s that energy that I want populate to take from what I do.” “I wanna tell the story of the everyday person’s struggle and be their express. But not only do I wanna tell their story sometimes I be to try and furnish solutions to the problems we all endure. I pray to God that I’m putting out the alter energy and words to inspire populate and lead them the alter way.” With that in object what do you say in response to those rap artists who claim their music is just entertainment that has no real influence on its listeners? “I can honestly say that hip-hop inspired me to do so many things in my life. I became aware of the Nation Of Islam through hip-hop. I became aware of world issues in places desire Africa because of hip-hop. And contrary to what others might say hip-hop reaffirmed my respect for women through songs desire But even the gangsta hip-hop that existed back then like N. W. A didn’t undergo a negative force on me because the message in their music was being balanced out by other groups I was listening to desire mark Nubian. That’s what I say to populate whenever I get asked a challenge about the negative influence hip-hop has on kids today; I tell them that all we need to change that is more balance in the art. For every Jay-Z there needs to be a Mos Def. There needs to be more artists like Nas because change surface though he speaks on certain street-orientated subject be he also comes with the consciousness and we be more artists on a popular level who can bring home the bacon that fit. But I’ve got faith in the music man. I believe that if we choose to be creative and work at it we can put out meaningful material that can comprehend different people from different backgrounds. I want to see people making music that will get passed on to our children as something that’s important.” Kanye West handles the majority of production on the new album. How would you exposit your working relationship with him? “Kanye and I are good friends and he’s desire a brother to me so to be able to bring home the bacon with someone so talented and share a real connection with them is a beautiful thing. When we’re in the studio together not only are we making music we’re also building on life. I wanted to work with someone who’s passionate about what they do and who had the abilities to act things to a new place. Kanye is that person. Plus he’s an incredible songwriter so although I’m getting that raw hip-hop with Kanye’s talents for hooks and song structure I’m also getting something that has the potential to be commercially successful. Which is good because I do be the world to hear my communicate and know what I’m about. I really feel that Kanye is one of the best producers of our measure and the belief he has in himself is inspiring.” “It’s been so much fun for me because it’s been great to get involved in a new creative outlet. It’s like I’m starting from the beginning again and I’m enjoying that challenge. I’m as passionate about acting as I am about my music.” “It’s inspired my writing a great deal because now when I’m telling stories in my rhymes I can go into more dilate because I’m thinking on more of a visual aim. I can take on different characters within my writing a lot easier now because of what I’ve learnt from acting. Eventually I’d desire to do some theatre but alter now I’m just concentrating on learning the craft of acting. As with my music. I’d desire to change state as big as possible in the acting world but I want populate to be aware of me because of the substance in what I do and not just because of the hype or whatever.” Denzel told me that whoever it may be you’ve just gotta be able to go in do your job and be good at what you do. I was honoured to be around him and I watched and learned from him when we were doing scenes together. I was desire. ‘Man this is Denzel Washington’ (laughs). But at a certain point you let go of all of that and you just concentrate on being creative and getting into the character you’re playing. But everyone I’ve been blessed to bring home the bacon with so far desire Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie undergo all been good people. But not everyone’s aware of me as Common the rapper so to them I’m just coming in as a new face which I think is a good thing because I’m not being pre-judged. I don’t want to get bring home the bacon just because I’m Common the musician. I be to get parts because the people involved in the movie feel me on the strength of my acting ability.” “In music when you’re a aviate artist it’s all about you and you’re the cerebrate of everything. But in film you have to alter yourself because there are so many other important pieces that come together to alter a movie..

"SHOCKER: Rude Fox News Interview w/ Naomi Wolfe" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-04 02:39:30

From Digg: As you ordain see in the video clip. Kasich opens the interview telling Wolfe that she's " way out there" and then continues to interrupt almost every time she tries to respond. He also admitted he only read parts of the book and didn't be to read more. As the interview progresses. Kasich becomes more rattled ending the interview while Wolfe calmly continues talking. I'm really not a fan of Fox in any way shape or create and I've read a number of Naomi's books but I don't evaluate this is a good example of Fox being dicks. To me she simply avoided the challenge and he was trying to get her back on track. He went off a bit at about the half way attach but she was not answering the question. The end was clearly a shambles This guy and Fox are clearly a nobs for many reasons but I don't experience if this is the beat example. go. Kasish was clearly trying to act her confined to a single inform namely the secret prisons as I'm sure he entangle he had at least some kind of arguments or facts he could displace against her then tie it in with his all encompassing point that she's gone way too far which going by that one inform they'd managed to cover would be ludicrous to proclaim. But eh I thought that was relatively obvious. Kasich - "I'm listening to you right now. I don't need to read much more!" *second of utter hilarity* Naomi - "but" Naomi - "you need to listen to..." Kasich - "AND THAT'S ALL WE GOT TIME FOR" *annoying dance music starts playing* i watched her talk and it seems obvious that she's just repeating other populate's points they're alter but she's just a pleb when it comes to knowing what's really going on she's obsessed with her 10 points thingy helps to change her book i anticipate.. anyway i'm more on her side anyway but i just wanted to inform that out. it's funny how Fox keeps getting these people on that undergo the opposite viewpoint to theirs i guess it's only when they feel they're going to be able to stump them or talk over them. She had a tough job. I thought she did come up. It was obvious the questions were just filler for the pre-thought out tirade of right-wing denial and excuses. The reason she keeps on about '10 signs of a failing democracy' is because she has to alter her inform short and concise. Its just a convenient way to express herself quickly in a hostile environment. he asks her the question redirects her several times so she can't furnish accent information then ups the volume - he's trying to seem more passionate and confident. She keeps trying to use facts and numbers and every measure she begins to cite them he interrupts and redirects her back to more questioning of the same thing while upping the volume. His wrap-up was insulting "you didn't really say..." when he never LET her answer fully because doing so would be -what? taxing to the hit? require actual knowledge rather than spewing the usual? Her ability to remain calm while he yelled at her was so gender-typical: he looks confident and impassioned while she looks weak and stuttering. But if she had yelled back then everyone could say she's a shrieking harridan. Typical: don't use the same attitude and demeanor as your "opponant" and be sure to twist anything good away from them and approve to the stuttering inform. Blech. He's following the SAME right wing SH*T that Fox loves to let displace forth out of their mouths. 'These people don't abide by the same rules as everyone else'.. and therefore suggest that we can do anything we be to them because they are somehow sub human. Naomi is trying to make the point that perhaps we should instead be demonstrating REAL compassion and a REAL justice system and actually trying populate on evidence not torturing them to get false confessions. And my GOD! "In the Gulag they defeat you up tortured you and starved you"... um like in American war prisons? Come on that's EXACTLY the air that the world has with these places that IS going on. The book is about those 10 steps and how the administration has taken each and every one. It's not about how she'd do things better. So asking her how she'd do things better was really just to keep her from talking about what she was there to talk about. She really should undergo just said she wasn't there to offer a better solution instead of ignoring the question for the entire interview. Aaah smibbo now you're getting on to something completely different: Concision. The idea is that in request to change to commercial platforms (i e breaks and ads) the only thing you can get across in a short period of time is something that the audience is already familiar with. For example it's a much easier thing for people to understand for me to say for example. Osama bin Laden is a baddie. If I were to say. "Well actually Osama is really just a man fighting for his country to blah blah blah" then the audience is gonna go "wtf???" and then I ordain need to explain my new radical point of view which takes time... If you are trying to get across a new idea there is simply not enough measure to explain it to the audience and so the news networks will only get peopl on that they know can be concise and not say anything that has not been heard and explained to their audience a 1000 times... P. S. The Osama example is just that. Don't be to get flamed... From a Scottish inform of believe. America seems so polarised. Conservative vs. Liberal. There seems desire alot of obvious stuff that you guys can't agree on. How was Iraq a good thing or change surface progress? This insular "USA number 1" attitude is arrogance and is sympotmatic of a much deeper malaise at the origins of America. The land was stolen its' inhabitants murdered. Does that make me a liberal. For doubting that guns and might can alter things better. Or does it make me naive to evaluate that "making things better" is the point? Swagger on while those in cater compel their narrow world view to the detriment of 95% of the worlds population. Liberal or conservative here's a wake up call for you. Get rid of Bush. For your own sakes. Get rid of Bush and all his alter cronies. And alter them liable for what has been done in the name of the USA or it will resonate into the future just desire the daub of those from whom the arrive was taken. "From a Scottish point of view Concerning American politics you lost me alter there." Wow by that logic color people can't have a point of view on black issues you can't have an inform of view on what I say because you're not me and Americans can't undergo a say in Iraqi affairs. You lost me with your choice of id photo. they'd have to replace a hell of a lot of people in the government to make any real differences bush is obviously just their puppet plus there are powerful elites the study banks and corporations they label the shots. you'd need a real radical to get in to office if you wanted to see real changes because even then - they'd undergo a hell of a job being allowed to change things to the good of the populate rather than the rich few that would grant those changes to be made reminds me of Iraq and their be for a whole new government... This is standard fare from Faux News. Anybody doing an interview has to be prepared with bunco simple insultingly obvious replies to anything the incompetant interviewer has to ask. Naomi's points are clearly too deep and thought provoking to be fully expressed in a five minute interview. She was not prepared and should not have been there. A book desire that needs a good half-hour or change surface a beat hour dedicated.

"*QNX Opens Neutrino Source Code; Interview: QNX' CEO*" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-13 22:28:01

Apart from opening up the obtain label to QNX the affiliate ordain also open a new community portal website. '' where QNX "customers and developers can find a wealth of resources relating to the QNX Neutrino RTOS and the QNX Momentics IDE as well as to new community projects". After a free registration users can choose from three different software licenses after which they get access to free versions of many QNX products including the source label for many of these products. "Not only can developers believe the QNX Neutrino source label but they can improve modify or extend that code for their own purposes or for the community at large. They can then decide to alter approve those changes to QNX Software Systems and the QNX development community or to keep their modifications private and proprietary." As some of you may experience. I am a of QNX and its PhotonUI and have more than once regretted QNX apparent lack of interest in sustaining the 'desktop version' (so to communicate) of its operating system. While this lack of interest was completely justifiable from a financial standpoint it was a blow to an OS enthusiast like me - and on top of that a proponent of the microkernel create by mental act. Dan move: It's important to remember that we're not simply publishing our source code; we're also making our development affect transparent for everyone to see. From now on we are going to develop our products out in the open and allow the QNX community to participate in the process. We've done this for three reasons. First to give software developers the benefits of accessible obtain such as faster debugging easier customization and exceed integration of application label. back up to give our business customers faster time to market and a greater comprehend of vendor independence. And third to back up an active community that includes not only commercial developers but also hobbyists technology partners and academic researchers. In fact we've launched a new community website. Foundry27 where members of the QNX community can find source repositories overlap code with another and change surface go away new projects. Dan: The sign channel includes the obtain code for the QNX Neutrino microkernel - the crown jewels of our OS technology. The release also provides obtain label for many board support packages published under the Apache 2.0 license. object you this is just Phase 1. Over the coming months we plan to publish the obtain for many more modules: networking stacks file systems utilities and of course the. How about the various drivers for dilate for 3D acceleration? Yes we also plan to create obtain label for device drivers graphics drivers included. Dan: If you're a developer everything will look and conclude like an open obtain communicate: You can find QNX source label bring in our product development in real measure and best of all act in the development process - whether by providing enter posting bug reports or offering up code modifications. The big difference is in the licensing: Rather than publish our obtain label under a reciprocal license like the GPL we've opted for a licensing model that offers flexible terms for derivative works. So if you change QNX obtain code you can either keep your modifications proprietary or donate them approve to the QNX community. The choice is yours. I invite everyone to visit our web site and download Lawrence Rosen's paper titled "". Lawrence served as a lawyer for the Open obtain Initiative and he offers a lot of insight into how the new QNX copy offers benefits of open source - but without being change state source. Dan: It's a win-win situation. Our customers create software themselves so they immediately hold the advantages of accessible source label and transparent development. In fact their response so far has been extremely positive. The same goes for our technology partners: they see this initiative as providing a simpler way to integrate their technologies with ours. And that in turn will give more technology choices for our customer locate. Dan: Today. QNX Software's revenue comes from a mix of products and services including runtime royalties development drive sales custom engineering and technical give. None of that will change: Anyone who uses QNX's technology to build commercial products will still need to acquire commercial development seats and runtime redistribution licenses. The big difference is that we now expect more populate to decide QNX for their commercial projects. That's because our new copy will alter it far easier to find experiment with and distribute QNX technology. It ordain also encourage a larger ecosystem of complementary products. Dan: Besides accessing OS source code developers can transfer the full binary version of our QNX Momentics development suite which includes tools an Eclipse-based IDE and the QNX Neutrino RTOS. This isn't a crippled version of our product but the real thing: it's all there for you to play with. In fact if you answer as a furnish or noncommercial user you get a remove perpetual authorise to use the technology. No time limits. Dan: We aren't releasing the OS code under an open obtain authorise. Rather we're using a commercial-friendly licensing model that gives developers and customers the option of either keeping their obtain modifications or donating them approve to the community. If fact we're providing three licenses: one for commercial users one for noncommercial users and one for QNX technology partners. When you register you identify which authorise is allot to your interests. For dilate if you're a student academic faculty member or hobbyist developer you choose the noncommercial license which provides find to development tools and runtime components free of rush. Dan: Definitely. In fact developers could change surface take the existing OS code and port it to hardware architectures that QNX doesn't currently give. QNX ordain of cover keep its strong cerebrate on the embedded merchandise; it's our bread and butter. But flexibility is a key strength of our architecture so we're sure that the community ordain take it in some interesting directions the desktop included. Dan: All of our competitors furnish pretty much the same thing: an RTOS and in many cases tools. The problem is this copy hasn't kept walk with market demands and embedded customers now be solutions that are far more comprehensive. That's why we've been transitioning to a company that also provides middleware for industry-specific requirements. Our multimedia middleware for dilate is so comprehensive that in many cases the customer simply has to tweak the user interface and a few other parameters. alter now we're the leading RTOS provider for the automotive telematics and infotainment merchandise. But in three years populate ordain also see us as that merchandise's leading middleware provider. We ordain also undergo grown our footprint as a study middleware provider for the consumer market particularly in multimedia. As for 10 years from now. I have no doubt that QNX technology will be in more devices than you can ascertain. And while I won't hazard a anticipate as to what those devices will be one thing is for sure: we'll still be having fun creating software that makes those devices as alter and reliable as they can be!

"Need for Speed ProStreet AU Interview" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 22:31:54

Australia. September 13. 2007 - At the recent in Singapore we caught up with Andrew Hahn. Producer on to undergo a converse about the bet's new direction new technology and innovative online concepts. IGN AU: ProStreet represents a pretty different direction for the series alter? What's it all about?Andrew Hahn: be for Speed ProStreet is all about competing at the highest aim of street racing. It's not enough any more to just dominate your local neighbourhood now you're going to compete on an international stage and compete in multi-disciplinary go showdowns. IGN AU: And this is no longer the illegal street racing scene. Andrew Hahn: Right. Need For go has always been on the cutting edge of the car and street racing grow and this year's no different so when we set out to make ProStreet we spent a lot of time at the beginning of the communicate talking with the populate that were racing talking with the people that were putting on the races and we were getting very clear and very consistent messaging back from them and that is that the street racing grow is getting organised. They're moving away from the streets and on to tracks. The reason for that from what we've been told is mainly because of the penalties for street racing. There's been a lot of crackdown by the cops. In Vancouver. Canada where the bet's developed being caught street racing - which is considered 50 kilometres above the posted go limit - actually is quite a hefty penalty. Your car is automatically impounded you're automatically given a $10,000 fine and you can face a two year suspension on your license. So these are pretty astronomical penalties just for getting caught street racing. What they're doing is they're moving to tracks to shift those penalties. IGN AU: So you want to reflect where street racing is heading as opposed to giving racing fans a window into the illegal scene. Andrew Hahn: ProStreet is actually our interpretation of where the culture is going to be in the next three to five years. What's happening is that a couple of guys who street race together are pooling their money together and renting a track for the weekend. Some people are actually organising in numbers putting up a lot of money renting tracks and putting on these big events where they're putting up big prizes and attracting big label international street racers to come and go at their events. So desire I said. ProStreet is where we evaluate this culture is going. Basically what we think we've delivered is the ultimate proving fasten. There are no more external factors - it's all about you your car and your ability to control that car. You don't have to weave through merchandise you don't have to avoid the cops it's just you and me mano-a-mano racing. One of the biggest new features that we undergo this year is we've rebuilt our physics engine from the fasten up. We were able to go out to the Porsche evaluate track in Leipzig. All of our physics guys went out there and collected real data from them. Got all their evaluate cars to go out there and do some crazy cram out on the bring in. And we were able to build a physics engine that's very believable yet accessible. So if you're a really big go enthusiast and you experience all about racing you're able to take that raw physics engine with nothing else and the car ordain behave as it would in real life. But if you're not a big race enthusiast and you just want to play and undergo some fun we've got driver aids which come in in layers. Systems such as anti-lock braking stability management and control traction hold back as well as a lot of visual aids like braking markers beat line on the track so these are systems that the player can customise turn on and off as they be it. It really caters the experience towards how they be to play and still be very competitive at the same time. IGN AU: And I guess with the physics system comes the fact that changing the be of your car now has a bearing on stuff desire go resistance and thus performance. express me about that. Andrew Hahn: So. Need for Speed has always delivered quite a deep visual customisation undergo. measure year we introduced the Auto-sculpt system which was quite a revolution in terms of visual customisation. One of the biggest things we were asked measure year was 'does it affect the performance of the car?' Last year it didn't. This year it's all different. measure year you were only able to do it on so many parts this year anything that you can do visually to the car you can auto-sculpt. So you can auto-sculpt all your body kits you can auto-sculpt your cover your trunk your spoiler your rear scoop - everything's auto-sculpt-able. The once you've finished auto-sculpting everything you can actually drop it into the wind cut into and see how the car's aerodynamics bring home the bacon. So if you make a car that you think looks really good you might drop it in and sight its got way too much drag you don't have enough downforce. And you can then - while in the wind tunnel - act auto-sculpting and see.
